Shiller Math is a Montessori-based, complete math curriculum in a box. It includes everything possible that a parent will need including the pencil. Shiller Math focuses on enabling each student to learn and enjoy math. This is done in a number of different ways.
Understanding Shiller Math
Shiller Math Kit I is designed for students aged 4-8 and is scripted for parents to do individually with the child. There is no lesson planning required, and ample information is provided for those who do not have a teaching background to be able to help their children to have fun while learning math. The complete kit includes numerous high-quality manipulatives and an audio CD with 25 songs all designed to make math a more hands-on activity.
Shiller Math introduces students to each topic in small pieces repeated through out each book and each level. This allows students to build upon previous knowledge in a natural way and makes each new skill a smaller, easier step to take. This type of spiral curriculum allows students the ability to learn each skill all the way to mastery at each level.
Benefits of Shiller Math
Repeated throughout the materials provided in kit 1 is the idea that parents should move through each lesson at the child’s pace. This may mean moving quickly through a lesson, repeating lessons over and over at the child’s prompting or skipping lessons to return to them at a later date. This concept allows each child to reach closure on each skill, at whatever pace that may mean for him or her.
One main focus in the Shiller Math program is teaching each skill in a variety of methods to benefit each learning style. Through a focus on each learning style, no child is left out of learning the skills necessary and because the curriculum repeats lessons in small chunks throughout each book, if a particular lesson does not suit an individual’s learning style, that lesson can be essentially skipped. Shiller Math is an excellent all-inclusive math program that will benefit most students. It may not be the best option for students who are adept at math, as the spiral approach may frustrate them, but it is an excellent choice for the average student as well as for students who have learning disabilities or who need help catching back up to their peers.
