The goal of every frugal homeschooler is to find the best deals on used homeschool curriculum. Hunting for the lowest prices, however, is not always the best strategy.

Wise buyers follow prudent guidelines when searching for used curriculum online. Following a few key steps will ensure that the experience is a satisfying one.

Check the Condition of the Curriculum

Books and manuals typically fall into one of the following categories:

  • New
  • Like New
  • Very Good
  • Good
  • Acceptable

Ads for homeschool books classified as “very good” or lower without identifying the reason for the designation (damaged book jacket, wear and tear, markings, etc.) may need further clarification. Consumables such as workbooks should also be clearly identified as either unused or with a notation if some of the pages have been marked.

Shoppers may want to avoid buying books classified as “acceptable” because of their poor quality and low resale value, unless the book is hard to find or it’s the only affordable option.

Don’t hesitate to contact the seller to ask specific questions – whether there is writing or highlighting in the book, if all components of the curriculum are included, if it is coming from a non-smoking home, and whether postage is included in the price.

Verify if the Book is a Current or Older Edition

Current editions usually command higher prices, but they also maintain better resale values. Curriculum publishers occasionally develop new supplemental resources, so if the book or manual will be used for more than one school year it’s probably a good idea to purchase the current edition. This is particularly important if the textbook is being used alongside an updated instructional DVD or online class.

If the goal is to buy the curriculum at the lowest possible price, however, an older edition may suffice. The newest edition may include minor updates, and if the budget is tight it may not warrant the higher price tag of the latest version. When in doubt, check the publisher information on the new edition to see exactly what changes were made.

Examine the Seller’s Reputation

Established websites such as eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and Half.com make it easy to check feedback from other buyers as a safeguard from the schemes of unscrupulous sellers. Some sites like the Vegsource Homeschool Talk and Swap also offer forums where buyers can report failed transactions. Read the reviews as a hedge of protection, and be sure to leave positive feedback if the transaction is completed successfully.

Paying for Online Curriculum Purchases

Payment options for online purchases include PayPal, credit cards, personal checks, and money orders. Many homeschoolers accept PayPal for convenience, and its Buyer Protection Program is an added bonus. If PayPal is not offered, a money order may be the best bet. Not all sellers accept personal checks, and those who do may require a holding period before the check clears.

Shop Wisely and Save Money

Online shopping for used curriculum doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. It’s a worthwhile endeavor for homeschool families looking to save money. Taking a few precautions before making purchases will ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises.
