George Washington was a brave man. He was liked by many people. Use some or all of these ideas when you are teaching your kids about him.
Feel free to use the ideas below to develop a unit study or use in your current curriculum when teaching your kids about George Washington. ObjectiveThis lesson will teach children about George Washington by taking a look at his own life, the United States at the time and how George Washington shaped the history of America. ActivitiesCherry Thumbprint Cookies (Alphabet Soup) There is an old story that says that George Washington cut down a cherry tree and when his father asked him if he did it, he replied, "I cannot tell a lie." This story shows the integrity and honesty of George Washington. Here is a good recipe for cherry thumbprint cookies that goes hand-in-hand with this lesson: Ingredients:
Directions: Make the cookies by heating the oven to 350 degrees. Mix vanilla, butter, egg yolks, and brown sugar until creamy. Add flour and salt and mix well. Roll the dough into one inch balls and place on a greased cookie sheet. Press your thumb in the middle of the dough and place a cherry in the indention. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Many stories, they are told, many tales abound of this great man who led our land, the father of our country. Field Trip OpportunityIf you are in the Virginia area, you can visit the George Washington Birthplace, located in Northern Neck of Virginia, 38 miles east of Fredericksburg. You can explore the area on your own or opt for a guided tour. It is open from 9-5 every day, year round, but it closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
